Clemson’s walk-off win over SMU should earn ACC multiple CFP bids

Clemson’s walk-off win over SMU should earn ACC multiple CFP bids

A season-long journey to a new country, a 12-team playoff, wound its way along a path of wild twists and turns to this moment on a cold December evening in Charlotte. A season that started in August came down to the very last game of the non-playoff season. As they neared midnight in the final conference championship game, which was scheduled to end Saturday, the Clemson Tigers struck a dramatic blow that served three purposes at once.

Freshman Nolan Hauser’s 56-yard walk-off field goal in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game put 10-3 Clemson in the playoff with a 34-31 victory over the SMU Mustangs. In the process, the Tigers stole a playoff bid from someone else. If there is any justice or sanity in the world, the team that stands out is the zombie monster that kept coming back from the dead, the 9-3 Alabama Crimson Tide. And it cemented 11-2 SMU as a playoff team.

Finally – at the very last minute – the ACC threaded the multi-bid needle. After some disrespect from the committee and a year of infighting, with league members Florida State and Clemson suing the ACC over the award of a media rights deal, the ACC stuck the landing.

The result doesn’t do much for the 10-2 Miami Hurricanes, who fell behind Alabama in the CFP rankings on Tuesday — a questionable decision that irked ACC leadership and also stoked years of anger over the Tide skipping undefeated Florida State . Seminoles to make final four-team playoffs. But this was the result the ACC needed: a Clemson victory in a close, competitive game that should keep SMU from falling from three spots ahead of Alabama to behind the Tide.

“It would be criminal if we don’t participate,” SMU coach Rhett Lashlee said just after midnight ET. “It would be wrong on so many levels. It would be wrong for so much of what college football stands for. We were basically just playing a playoff game and we played pretty well. … We showed up and we competed with our butts off. We should be inside, they know we should be inside. So we’ll see what happens.’

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney endorsed SMU as a playoff team immediately afterward.

“They better be in the playoffs,” he said.

Alabama fans were taken on an emotional roller coaster watching this game. What actually happened was the worst possible outcome. For a long time, this looked like it would be a Clemson blowout of SMU, threatening to create a scenario where the committee would drop the Mustangs from the playoffs and keep Bama in.

Down 31-14 in the fourth quarter, SMU mounted a furious rally with its pyrotechnic (but erratic) offense. The Mustangs scored 17 points in 13 minutes to tie the game with 16 seconds left, seemingly sending the game into overtime. But Clemson made three big plays to get this in regulation and seemingly knock Alabama out of the playoffs.

The first was a 41-yard kickoff return by Adam Randall to the Clemson 45-yard line – the Tigers’ longest return of the season. The second, with nine seconds left, was a pass from Cade Klubnik to Antonio Williams for 17 yards. That play, followed by a timeout, gave Clemson a chance to try the long bomb kick for the win.

Hauser, from nearby Cornelius, NC, trotted out for his chance to become a Clemson hero. He had made 16 of 21 field goals this season, but missed from 44 yards earlier in the game. And this would be his career five yards long.

With a sharp pop from Holden Caspersen and a good grab from Swinney’s son Clay, Hauser sent the kick into the air – and just long enough to clear the crossbar. (The kick may have been good from 57, but not from 58. It was close.) That set off a Clemson blowout, with players running onto the field and the elder Swinney sprinting across the artificial turf.

It was a remarkable comeback from the edge for Clemson. How many times were the Tigers counted out? At least three, once for each loss. There was a 31-point outburst to start the season against the Georgia Bulldogs. Then there was a 33-21 home loss to the Louisville Cardinals in early November. And the 17-14 home loss to end the month to the rival South Carolina Gamecocks.

That outcome made this ACC title a make-or-break game for Clemson. Win, and the Tigers were in. Lose, and they’re not even close.

They seized the opportunity. Aided by a pair of huge first-quarter turnovers from otherwise electric SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings, Clemson jumped out to a 21-7 lead in less than 12 minutes. A Hauser field goal extended the lead to 17 at halftime, and the margin was still 17 heading into the final quarter. Then the drama kicked into high gear.

Clemson made the four-team playoffs six years in a row, from 2015 to ’21, and won the national championship twice during that span. But the Tigers missed the field the past three seasons, raising major concerns about whether Swinney had lost his mojo. That became even more pronounced this season when it looked like Clemson wouldn’t even make the expanded version of the playoff.

Ultimately, the Tigers are back in the title hunt. They could end up being the No. 12 seed when the bracket is revealed Sunday afternoon ET, which could involve a frigid road game in South Bend or State College, Pennsylvania. That won’t be easy, but Clemson deserved its chance.

And so did SMU. It would be a travesty of the highest order if a thirteenth game saw them fall behind by three points to a team with a worse record at home this weekend.

So in all likelihood, the ACC will be the third multi-bid conference in the tournament, along with the Big Ten (four teams) and SEC (three). That was in doubt until the final play of the final match, but when Hauser’s kick went over the crossbar, it paved the way for two teams from this beleaguered league to make the play-offs.

Paul Mescal hosts ‘SNL’ with Shaboozey and Trisha Paytas

Paul Mescal hosts ‘SNL’ with Shaboozey and Trisha Paytas

Paul Mescal hosted Saturday evening live for the first time this week. Season 50 was light for new hosts. The Gladiator II star was only the second newcomer of the season after Jean Smart made her hosting debut during the season premiere in September.

Mescal was joined by musical guest Shaboozey, who also made his debut on the show. He joins country rap artist Jelly Roll and Chappell Roan (who debuted a country-style song in an episode earlier this season) to bring a little country to New York’s Studio 8H. Shaboozey played his new song Good News and his mega hit A Bar Song (Tipsy).

Opened cold

This week’s cold open saw the revival of Dana Carvey’s iconic character, the Church Lady. While newer viewers probably won’t remember the character who mainly appeared in the late 1980s, SNL super fans and viewers of a certain age will love this cold open. The Church Lady has returned several times since her heyday, most recently in 2016. In this new version, she hosts her talk show with guests Matt Gaetz, Hunter Biden and Juan Soto.

Sarah Sherman’s Matt Gaetz impression is always fun to watch. David Spade drops in to play Hunter Biden, which, while less convincing, also feels like a throwback to the ’90s. Marcello Hernández gives an excellent performance as Soto, but overall there’s a slight incoherence to this cold opening, even as an iconic character comes back to life.

Monologue

The monologue was charming and good for a host not known for comedy. After a montage of him crying in movies, he says it himself: “It’s safe to say, there’s not much comedy on the resume!”

The most interesting part of this monologue is the inclusion of multimedia elements. It features a montage and superimposed images, making this feel more like a late night talk show monologue than a monologue SNL An. However, their inclusion really works.

Hernández also comes out in shorts (a staple of Mescal’s usual wardrobe.)

Earring

This sketch really shows off Heidi Gardner and Emil Wakim’s comedic timing. It’s fun to see Wakim, especially in a comedic lead role, and Gardner is perfect as usual. The sketch centers on two parents who overreact when their college-age son comes home with an earring. Although the premise is simple, it is perfectly reinforced. It also ends strong with a visual gag from Michael Longfellow. It may not be the flashiest or most memorable sketch, but it is very well executed.

Gladiator: II

While Gladiator II was a big movie this year, Bad And Moana 2 were bigger. “So after a few hasty shots, Gladiator II is now a musical.” This skit is fun and the songs are cute. Mescal should perhaps consider musicals too (he has a good voice!)

Commercial Italian restaurant

Ashley Padilla plays an actress who impresses a commercial executive, much to the chagrin of her co-star, played by Mescal. This sketch feels like one you might see on any sketch night across the country. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn’t feel like the most memorable of the episode. It’s fine, but it feels like they could have gone further.

Paul Mescal is dad

This Please Don’t Destroy sketch has some real laugh-out-loud moments, but overall there’s something very strange about it. You’ll probably love or hate this sketch.

It follows the guys from Please Don’t Destroy as Mescal envisions a life with them. He is their father, and they are his adult sons in footie pajamas. It’s best not to think about it too much.

Pirates

Something about this sketch isn’t working. It follows a bachelor party that goes to a Magic Mike-style male review. Given how this season has gone, this writer initially wondered if this was somehow a “Domingo” sketch, but no, this was just another bachelor party.

Male cast members come out as pirates, but instead of stripping down, they delve into pirate history. On paper this should work. There are some good individual jokes (especially a bit from Wakim), but it never quite gets its sea legs, aargh.

Weekend update

Weekend update This week leaned heavily on the shooting of United Healthcare’s CEO and also included plenty of gaffes. Michael Che and Colin Jost laughed together a lot, but sometimes for good reason. Che added some good ad-libs, the best of which called Joe Biden “still president.”

Only one character came along: Heidi Gardner’s “soccer mom who just became famous.”

Brilliant lawyer

Andrew Dismukes plays a lawyer with a “brilliant” strategy: twenty people, including his client, put on Devo hats, yellow suits and beards so that the witness cannot identify him. The sketch is absurdist and generally just okay, but there are some good jokes in there, including the visual gag.

Spotify packed

A group of friends are looking at their Spotify Wrapped and discover that someone is a top listener of Satoshi Gutman from Dundalk, Maryland (the epicenter of the Ace-core movement). Gutman (played by Bowen Yang) shows up to play a talk pop track and then hosts a podcast with Trisha Paytas.

This sketch feels like it should be a parody of something. The choices are all so specific, from Gutman’s monk costume to the many references to the asexual community. However, it is difficult to say what the reference is. Maybe there isn’t one, or maybe this writer is missing something (maybe you need to be from Maryland). The inclusion of Paytas is also shocking. Even though she’s a very well-known YouTuber, podcaster, and social media star, playing herself feels big for someone who might not be a household name to those who aren’t chronically online.

A completely unknown red carpet

Buzzfeed on the red carpet at the premiere of Timothée Chalamet’s biopic about Bob Dylan, A complete unknown. Chloe Fineman delivers a solid Chalamet impression, while James Austin Johnson delivers a perfect Dylan. Johnson played Dylan in a hilarious promo for the John Mulaney episode earlier this season and it’s great to see that he’s able to carry that impression over to the actual show. Mescal is also coming to play Bono. Although the impression is largely his own Irish accent, he has some good jokes and great physicality as the frontman of U2.

However, Dismukes steals the show as Bruce Springsteen. While Fineman and Johnson’s impressions are technically better, that’s almost expected of them. Dismukes really rises to their level and delivers some of the best lines in the sketch.

SNL returns December 14 with Chris Rock and musical guest Gracie Abrams.

Lando Norris wins the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for McLaren and thus seals the constructors’ title

Lando Norris wins the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for McLaren and thus seals the constructors’ title

Lando Norris secured McLaren’s first Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship in 26 years with victory in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Norris led from start to finish and his fourth win of the season was enough to seal the championship with 14 points, despite Ferrari finishing second and third with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

Leclerc’s brilliant drive after starting 19th on the grid kept the tension high. If anything had happened to Norris’ car, Ferrari would have won the title.

Lewis Hamilton took fourth place in his final race for Mercedes, passing teammate George Russell with six corners of the race remaining.

Hamilton did donuts in the pit immediately after crossing the line and then took a moment to collect his thoughts with his car before congratulating Norris and McLaren F1 boss Zak Brown and consoling Sainz and Leclerc.

McLaren’s scare started at the first corner when Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri, who had qualified second behind the Briton, was tagged into a spin by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The world champion was given a ten-second time penalty for causing the incident.

That put Piastri at the back of the field and left McLaren’s hopes hanging on Norris.

Leclerc increased McLaren’s nerves with a stunning first lap, gaining a whopping 11 places, including passing five cars in one go on the approach to the chicane at turns six and seven.

Leclerc’s climb continued as he passed Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso, and after his pit stop on lap 20, the Alpine of Pierre Gasly. He finished third when the Mercedes of George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen got out of his way.

Sitting in third place behind Norris and Sainz for the last fifteen laps, Leclerc asked if “we are losing the constructors this way” and was told: yes, but the race was not over yet.

But Norris and McLaren had everything under control and he crossed the line six seconds ahead of Sainz, ending a long and painful spell without a title.
