CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (PIA) — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is strengthening its conservation and sustainability initiatives in Central Luzon.

During the eighth episode of the Philippine Information Agency’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, DENR Regional Director Ralph Pablo emphasized the region’s strategic focus on environmental protection and sustainable development.

“Environment for Life encompasses the DENR’s two-pronged approach, combining comprehensive government and community plans with strategic partnerships involving local government units, academia, the private sector and communities. We aim to promote a harmonious relationship between development and conservation,” he said.

During the eighth episode of the Philippine Information Agency’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo shared that over 87 million seedlings have been planted in Central Luzon, creating nearly 137,000 hectares of new forests and generating over 546,000 jobs. The agency also plans to add 21,900 hectares of forest plantations nationwide by 2028, which will significantly contribute to increased forest cover. (Aldrin Joshua P. Mallari/PIA 3)

Under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, the agency has made great strides in using geospatial technology to monitor and manage natural resources.

The recently established Geospatial Database Office plays a crucial role in monitoring biodiversity conservation and reforestation efforts through satellite imagery.

In addition, mapping areas prone to geological hazards such as landslides and floods using maps based on the Geographic Information System helps.

“Our geospatial initiatives allow us to establish clear baselines and accurately measure changes in the environment,” said Pablo.

This technological integration is crucial for sustainable development and disaster risk reduction in the region.

DENR has also strengthened forest protection through the National Greening Program and the Intensified Forest Protection programs.

In Central Luzon, more than 87 million seedlings have been planted, creating nearly 137,000 hectares of new forest and creating more than 546,000 jobs.

The agency plans to add 21,900 hectares of forest plantations nationwide by 2028, which will significantly increase forest cover.

Furthermore, the DENR’s efforts extend to water management. Executive Order No. 22 established the Water Resources Management Office, consolidating the sector for the first time in Philippine history.

Thanks to this initiative, 614 water sources and 986 water users have been mapped. This enables more efficient use of water sources and reuse of infrastructure.

“Access to water is critical for public health, agriculture, industry and economic development. This integrated approach ensures that more communities receive this vital resource,” Pablo noted.
