Free Shakespeare in the Park theme nights create sweet enchantment – NBC Los Angeles

What to know

  • “Shakespeare in the Park 2024” presented by the Independent Shakespeare Co.
  • Free; “As You Like It” fun, on select nights, through September 1
  • Several special events for the public, including a pre-show family workshop on July 21, grace the program

“All the world’s a stage” are, without any criticism, some of the most famous words from “As You Like It,” William Shakespeare’s sweet woodland adventure.

But what kind of crazy antics go on off a real stage, specifically an open-air one where the joyful foibles of “As You Like It” merrily unfold?

The short answer is: “a lot of stuff.”

That’s not very Shakespearean of us – ‘woods of stuff’ is a much wittier phrase – but the merry goings-on at Shakespeare in the Park really do deserve a big, exuberant term like ‘woods’.

Presented by the Independent Shakespeare Co., the free theater series descends on the Old Zoo in Griffith Park for several nights each summer. And yes, you guessed it: “As You Like It” is the comedy treat that will hit the stage in 2024.

But look beyond the stage and you see more: more to do, more to participate in, more to enjoy.

In short: a lot of material, all designed to excite and attract the audience.

The theatre company is known for having wonderful events in its programme every season. There are a number of notable events planned.

The “Players in the Park” workshop is aimed at families and anyone who wants to learn more about the “characters, plot and artistic choices” of the play. This workshop will take place before the performance on July 21.

There will be more special and heartwarming evenings to experience in the lush Griffith Park Valley soon, including the Artistic Director’s Salon on July 27, a chance to dress in your cottagecore best on August 1, Pride Night on August 9, and a chic “Swingin’ Soiree” on August 17.

On this page you will find the colorful calendar, describing each event and what to expect.

And should we once again shout loudly about the fact that these events, which are especially intended for the public, and also the famous play, are free of charge?

“Hooray,” we say once again as we enjoy this summer gem and all the free entertainment it brings to the theater-loving community of Southern California.
