Muharram processions cause tensions within the community

The Uttar Pradesh police have taken strong action by arresting 15 persons in connection with three separate incidents involving unauthorised religious processions during Muharram. Allegations include brandishing sharp weapons and disturbing communal peace, an official statement said.

Police Commissioner Vrinda Shukla said that on Wednesday, Muharram day, a group wearing tazia was allegedly attacked while trying to pass through a field in Payagpur police station area. An FIR was lodged, leading to the arrest of 11 men on Friday.

On Wednesday night, a second FIR was lodged in the Nanpara Police Station area against persons who tried to cross a prohibited area with a religious procession, resulting in three arrests on Friday. In addition, another FIR was lodged for openly brandishing sharp weapons, leading to the arrest of one person, Abu Talib.
