US warns of Microsoft outage, Nadella says work underway to get systems back online

San Francisco, July 20 (IANS) US cybersecurity agency CISA has warned that hackers are trying to take advantage of the outage at Microsoft for phishing and other malicious activities. The tech giant’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said they are working hard to get systems back online safely worldwide.

The US cybersecurity agency warned people “not to click on phishing emails or suspicious links” as this could lead to email compromises and other scams.

“Threat actors continue to exploit widespread IT outages for phishing and other malicious activities. CISA urges organizations to ensure they have robust cybersecurity measures in place to protect their users, assets, and data from these activities,” it said in a statement.

The outage affected Windows 10 and later systems and is attributed to the “CrowdStrike Falcon content update and not malicious cyber activity.”

Nadella said in a message on X that “we are aware of this issue and are working closely with CrowdStrike and the wider industry to provide customers with technical guidance and support to get their systems back online safely.”

A recent statement from Microsoft states that they are actively supporting customers in their recovery.

According to CrowdStrike, the issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been implemented.
