When looking up Ang Lee’s 2005 cowboy film Brokeback MountainGoogle gives this clever little number as a question “people also ask”: “What was the use of Brokeback Mountain?” Watch: The Annie Proulx short story from which the Jake Gyllenhaal/Heath Ledger two-hander is adapted is a truly heartbreaking tale of two men who love each other in a world that would rather destroy them than let that love blossom. The “point” of Brokeback Mountain is that it exists, forcing the closed minds watching to see the consequences of a homophobic culture reflected back to them. The point is that Brokeback Mountain is good, sad, melancholic, and most importantly, gay.
