MARSHALL — It’s a milestone year at Boulder Creek Assisted Living & Memory Care, and community members are invited to help celebrate, Jan Mason said. Next week, Boulder Creek will celebrate its 10th anniversary with events including a scavenger hunt around Marshall and a visit from the Scotty Biggs Barbecue food truck.

“It should be a lot of fun,” said Mason, Boulder Creek’s director of assisted living. Clues for the scavenger hunt will be posted on Boulder Creek’s website and Facebook page beginning Monday. Events such as virtual dementia tours, which educate people about the effects of dementia, are also planned for later this fall.

Boulder Creek Assisted Living & Memory Care opened on June 30, 2014. Boulder Creek’s history dates back to the efforts of members of the Marshall community to meet the need for memory care and respite care, according to a press release. The Carr family of Marshall, Boulder Estates Executive Director Jim Knudson and Jamie Engers Lanners all worked to create a safe and secure facility that felt like home.

The Boulder Creek facility was designed with two distinct “neighborhoods,” for tenants with dementia or related conditions. Boulder Creek offers care and activities to help residents live life to the fullest, as well as a support group for families of residents. Dementia impacts not only those with the disease, but also their loved ones, the release said.

Over the past 10 years, Boulder Creek’s services have expanded to include new technology and training, an on-site therapy dog and a community library for people with dementia, the press release said.

Mason said Boulder Creek staff and residents were looking forward to celebrating the anniversary, although the size of the events had to be adjusted due to COVID precautions.

“It’s still exciting,” she said. Instead of large public events, there will be some festivities for residents and family. However, the community will be able to participate in a scavenger hunt.

Mason said purple “boulders” were hidden around Marshall. Clues to their locations will be released online each day from July 22 to 28, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The first person to find the rock can turn it in for a prize at Boulder Creek, she said.

Additionally, the public is invited to come to the Boulder Creek parking lot on Tuesday for Scotty Biggs Barbecue. The food truck will be at Boulder Creek from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other events are planned, such as virtual tours about dementia. “Shine a light on dementia” in October, Mason said.
