Tourists flock to kiosks in Salalah for local fruits and vegetables

Muscat: Tourists and visitors to Dhofar Governorate enjoy visiting the kiosks in Salalah city that sell local fruits and vegetables, especially during the Khareef season.

They use a water pipe (locally called mishli) to drink the juice from the coconut shells. They also buy fruits and local tropical fruits such as bananas and favai.

The seasonal climatic conditions characteristic of Dhofar Governorate and particularly the Salalah Plain have allowed for the cultivation of various types of fruits and vegetables, some of which are produced throughout the year.

Coconut plants are the most important agricultural crop and form the largest agricultural area in the Salalah Plain.

Among the main agricultural products of Dhofar Governorate are coconuts (nargile) or, as it is locally known, mishli. In addition, bananas, lemons, guava, favai, tomatoes, courgettes and other fruits and vegetables are also sold. These are displayed at kiosks to attract visitors and residents of Salalah, especially in season.

Visitors to Khareef prefer to buy fresh fruits, picked from trees along the roads that crisscross the orchards and farms.

The agricultural plain stretches from the east to the west of the city of Salalah and includes fertile orchards full of fruit trees and seasonal vegetables. Hookah trees adorn the streets of the governorate and create a beautiful natural landscape.

The agricultural plain of Salalah is also characterized by the abundance of other agricultural crops, including favai and bananas, which require environmental and climatic conditions suitable for tropical and subtropical areas with temperate and humid weather.

The harvests contribute to increasing productivity in the agricultural sector in the Sultanate of Oman, one of the most important production sectors.

The Salalah Plain is known for banana cultivation, one of the most important economic and food crops in the governorate. Its cultivation is widespread in the Salalah Plain due to its favorable climatic and environmental conditions.

The Salalah plain is also known for its favai tree, which is evergreen and fast growing. The quality and quantity of the fruit are excellent and it can be compared with the best international varieties in different regions of the world.

Autumn is the best season to grow and plant favai fruit. Favai fruit has many health and nutritional benefits.

It is worth noting that the Salalah Agricultural Plain produces a number of other agricultural crops that contribute to achieving food security, in addition to contributing to the marketing and export of some agricultural crops within and outside the Sultanate of Oman, such as lemon, guava, papaya, tomatoes, zucchini, sugarcane, guava, pomegranate, berries, avocado, sour cream fruit. Locally, crops of maize, pepper, zucchini, cucumber, eggplant, watercress, lettuce, sweet potato and legumes are also grown.
