BBB warns of storm scammers in Upstate NY

The Better Business Bureau is warning residents to be wary of scammers targeting those affected by recent severe storms. Katarina Schmieder, communications director for BBB of Upstate New York, says these “fly-by-night” contractors go door to door promising quick repairs, but often take money without doing any work.

Schmieder advises homeowners to ask for identification and to check that the contractor’s vehicle has a business name and local license plate. She warns against paying in full up front and suggests getting multiple quotes to ensure a fair deal.

The BBB also warns against charity fraud. Residents should do their research before donating and always read contracts carefully before signing. For more tips, visit the BBB website.
