Within Kwale’s ambitious electrification project

The Kwale State Government, in partnership with the national government, is set to launch a large-scale rural electrification initiative, the Deputy Governor said.

Speaking in Busho in Kinango sub-county, Chirema Kombo said the ambitious project aims to extend electricity infrastructure to disadvantaged rural areas in the region.

The initiative will also boost economic growth, improve access to modern amenities and enhance the overall quality of life of residents, he said.

“We are working with the national government to install electricity in rural areas so that our people can benefit from better amenities and live a comfortable life.”

According to Kombo, the electrification project fits into the government’s broader efforts to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas.

He said access to electricity is a fundamental right and a catalyst for development, highlighting the transformative impact that reliable electricity can have on education, health, agriculture and small-scale industries.

Kombo said that thanks to the support of the national government and strategic partnerships, the Kwale State Government is optimistic about the success of the project and its potential to drive sustainable development.

The project prioritizes community engagement and capacity building initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability and empowerment of local people.

The vice governor added that the project aims to improve health and preserve the environment.

Most rural communities rely on firewood, a contributing factor to deforestation.

Kombo said that with sufficient electricity, residents can embrace e-cooking and reduce their dependence on natural resources, while also helping to conserve natural resources and provide quality healthcare.

“The initiative is not only aimed at providing electricity, but also at empowering communities to adopt sustainable practices for a healthier and more prosperous future.”

The province also wants to work with investors to install network and internet masts to bridge the digital divide and increase economic opportunities in rural areas, the provincial official said.

He added that the project will provide robust connectivity which is crucial for communications, education, healthcare and economic growth.

According to Kombo, the availability of a strong and reliable network will attract businesses, facilitate e-commerce and create remote working opportunities, thereby creating jobs and boosting the local economy.

He said the move underscores a broader strategy to empower rural communities by providing them with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly connected world.

The Deputy Governor stressed the need to prioritize peace and support the government’s development initiatives.

He said the potential impact of ongoing unrest due to anti-government protests poses a significant risk of delaying the project’s implementation, while it promises great benefits.

He urged all parties concerned to unite to create a stable environment conducive to progress and prosperity.
