Army chief reaches Jammu to review security situation in JK – Statetimes

Jammu: Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi arrived here on Saturday to review the security situation at a meeting in Jammu and Kashmir amid rising terror activities in parts of the otherwise peaceful Jammu region.

This was the army chief’s second visit to Jammu in less than three weeks after he took over as the 30th chief of the Indian Army on June 30.

Nine army personnel, including a captain, were killed in two separate terror attacks in the remote forest areas of Machedi in Kathua and Desa forest in Doda on July 8 and 15.

The army chief will chair a high-level meeting on security at the police headquarters, which will be attended by senior officials from the police, army, paramilitary and intelligence agencies, officials said.

They said senior officials from the Defense and Interior Ministry are also likely to attend the meeting.

On July 16, the Army said that all units of the Udhampur-based Northern Command are committed to eradicating the scourge of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Army said it has been conducting a series of joint and coordinated operations with the JK Police to root out foreign terrorists who have infiltrated from across the border and are moving into the upper reaches of Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar districts of Jammu region and then into Kashmir.

On July 3, the Chief of Army Staff visited the border district of Poonch and chaired a meeting in Jammu, where he reviewed the security situation. (PTI)
