This week the 2024 Emmy nominations were announced and it was no surprise that FX’s blockbuster Shoguna costume drama set in feudal Japan and based on the book of the same name by James Clavell, received the most nominations. Shogun scored 25 nominations, including Best Drama, Best Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Actress for Anna Sawai and Best Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano.

Shogun, star Sanada tells T&C, “It was a great opportunity to introduce our culture to the world and we try to make it as authentic as possible. That’s very important to us. Luckily, we were able to hire a Japanese crew who has the experience of making a historical drama, all the experts on set for every department: wig, costume, props, everything.”

Watching the show, Sanada adds, “I hope people can feel our teamwork – cooperation between East and West.” He adds, “It’s a difficult time in the world now, but it’s a good example: different culture, different language, religion, working together, sharing everything, getting to know each other, respecting each other and then working towards the same goal, right? I hope people can feel that kind of thing, especially now.”

If you haven’t watched all ten episodes yet, Shogun Season one is now streaming online on Hulu. (A season two and three are currently in the works.)

For information: Shogun is told almost entirely in Japanese, a decision that was crucial to the creators. “This is a show about translation,” co-creator Justin Marks told Terms and Conditions“This is a show about the process of not really fully understanding what’s being said and then learning, or watching someone translate, give their angle for what they want. I don’t know how you do that when you replace it all with English.”

If you want to watch the 1980 miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain, you can stream that version on Paramount+.
