Cameron Young’s risky British Open bid pays off

An off-balance shot somehow turned out well for Cameron Young.

The 27-year-old American was scheduled for a challenging short chip on hole eight of the British Open on Saturday.

Young stood on a slope slightly to the left of the green, with his feet hanging over the lip of the bunker.

“Don’t back down, man!” one of the announcers said before Young took the photo. “How’s he going to do this?”

Young hit the ball impressively to the left, taking advantage of the undulating green from left to right. The ball rolled perfectly across the green, allowing him to make a tight putt to finish the hole.

The ball was just one awkward turn away from ending up in the bunker, which would have resulted in a double bogey or worse.

“What was the margin there on the left?” said the same announcer. “To the bunker—inches, right?”

“You can throw that right in the bunker, really,” said the other.

Young saved his par and kept his third-round score at 3-under after eight holes and 1-over for the tournament.

Young, still chasing his first major title, bogeyed the next hole but still finished the round level on points and moved up the leaderboard a little.

He is nine strokes behind leader Shane Lowry.
