Survey shows Australians want to exercise but can’t get enough

New research from sports retailer Rebel Sport reveals that 16 percent of Australians exercise only once a week, and sometimes even less.

This is while the recommended amount of moderate physical activity per week for adults is two to five hours, according to the Ministry of Health.

As part of the ‘rebel’s Largest Sporting Survey’, more than 10,000 ‘rebel Active’ members were asked how they participate in and follow their favourite sports and exercise activities.

The study found that two in three participants exercise to relieve stress symptoms and support their mental health.

Other reasons included fun (59 percent), socializing (41 percent) and improving appearance (44 percent) among respondents.

The results also showed that a quarter of Australians exercise before 6am or after 8pm.

Rosemary Martin, general manager of marketing at the Rebels, said she hoped the results would be a rallying cry to encourage more people to use sport and exercise to improve their own lives.

“We are a sporting nation and watching our athletes achieve their dreams in the coming weeks will inspire generations of young Australians to pursue their sporting dreams,” she said.

“We encourage Australians of all ages to use that same inspiration to transform the ordinary into the spectacular: getting fit and healthy, both physically and mentally.”
