Brunei’s airport and digital services unaffected by global IT outage

The Ministry of Transport and Information Technology (MTIC) and its departments have issued statements assuring the public that Brunei International Airport and the government remained largely unaffected by the global information technology (IT) outage on Friday.

According to the MTIC Civil Aviation Department, no major delays or disruptions have been reported at the airport.

Airlines and travel companies are doing everything they can to minimize the impact on passengers. However, travelers are advised that they may experience problems with onward flights at other airports.

According to the E-Government National Centre, which also falls under the MTIC, the global IT outage was caused by the flawed CrowdStrike update and the Brunei government’s digital services were not affected.

However, the center says it is working with stakeholders to monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, the Brunei Computer Emergency Response Team (BruCERT) said the IT outage affected global users across sectors including aviation, retail, communications and banking. It said CrowdStrike confirmed that the faulty update caused a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) that affected Windows users running its Falcon Sensor products and is working on releasing a new update to fix the issue.

BruCERT also advised affected organizations to contact CrowdStrike representatives for support, the latest information and recommendations.

Cyber Security Brunei (CSB) reported that multiple organizations in the Sultanate have been affected and efforts have been made to contain or resolve the issue.

It also reminded the public to be on the lookout for phishing attempts and social engineering attacks that are taking advantage of the IT outage to steal personal information and financial data. – James Kon
