Authorities of NHL Medical College have removed electrical appliances from hostel rooms as students fret over the ongoing MBBS internal exams. They cited concerns over the recent fire at the Rajkot play area.
Air conditioners, coolers, irons and even kettles were removed from hostel rooms to prevent overload and fires.

Students are not allowed to use high-power electrical appliances in the student houses.

Raids and privacy violations cause
outrage
NHL Medical College, affiliated to SVP Hospital and managed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), is being closely watched for its behaviour.
Students, who spoke to Mirror anonymously, expressed frustration over the college and AMC officials who entered the girls’ dormitory rooms without warning and confiscated electronic devices. They complained that this disruption affected their exam preparation, especially with final exams approaching.
“They inspected the girls’ house a few days ago for electronic gadgets like air conditioners and coolers. Yet they still entered our rooms and took everything. We are struggling to bear the scorching heat,” complained a student.

“Male members of the inspection team barged into the girls’ rooms without informing us, violating our privacy,” a female student told Mirror.

Unnoticed complaints
The students’ problems went beyond the confiscated air conditioners and coolers. “They have confiscated electric kettles and irons, entered our rooms at odd hours like 11 pm and even in our absence. We pay high fees for our studies and do not get enough facilities,” said a final year student of MBBS.

“Recently, a part of the ceiling fell down. Such things happen regularly, but the authorities do not listen to us. We apologized and even appealed to the dean, but to no avail,” she added.

Unbearable
circumstances, fear of repercussions
With 26 rooms on each of its 12 floors, the NHL Medical College girls’ hostel is home to many students who pay hefty fees ranging from Rs 6 lakhs to Rs 22 lakhs per year. Students described persistent insect infestations, faulty fans and scorching heat due to the weather. They also alleged threats from the authorities, including the possibility of being barred from exams.

Dean cites safety concerns
Dean of NHL Medical College, Dr Cherry Shah told Mirror: “Students are not allowed to use electronic gadgets in the hostel rooms. We conduct regular checks. The latest checks have been done to ensure that no fire incidents like the Rajkot fire tragedy have taken place here. The students have to abide by the rules and regulations of the college.”
