TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer linebacker Shaquil Barrett announced his retirement on Saturday.

The 31-year-old announced on Instagram that he is retiring after recently signing a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.

“It’s time for me to retire. It’s been an amazing ride and I appreciate everything that has come with it over the years. I’m ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and helping them achieve and fulfill their dreams.

“Anyone who has ever achieved their dreams knows how much work, time and consistency it takes to achieve them. I am ready to build those skills in my children, which will take 100% dedication. (I know) it will come as a surprise to some, but I have been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been clearer than it is now.”

The linebacker played five seasons in Tampa Bay, breaking the franchise record for most sacks in a single season.

“(Shaq Barrett) played a huge role in the team’s 2020 Super Bowl run,” WFLA’s Kenny Morales said.

Barrett was fired by the Bucs in March.
