Texas A&M Aggies Land Commitment From Elite RHP Transfer Grant Cunningham

Keep sending them for the Texas A&M Aggies.

After Michael Earley and his team rebuilt their roster with a majority of the players originally entered in the NCAA transfer portal following the departure of Jim Schlossnagle, they began to focus on the future.

His hiring, supported by players past and present, was a key factor in the Aggies’ return from last season, and the coach made that abundantly clear from day one of taking the job.

He felt nothing less than gratitude.

“I totally understand the players opening the door for me, but I had to hit the right spots,” Earley said. “I would never pry and push my way in, but (when) the players opened the door for me, I ran through it. I’m so grateful.”

Earley was also fortunate to have the commitments of many of the players who formed the core of Texas A&M’s College World Series Final berth returned, as well as a few new faces who should keep his Aggies competitive in his first season.

Last in that group is Washington right-handed pitcher Grant Cunningham, who was ranked No. 2 among available transfers before deciding to go to College Station. He committed Saturday.

“Extremely blessed to be an Aggie!!” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Gig ‘em.”

Last season, Cunningham made 20 appearances for the Huskies, striking out 56 batters with a 2.86 ERA. His best pitch is his fastball, which has reportedly reached 98 mph — almost a reminiscent of Chris Cortez’s hot hand.

The pitcher enters Year 3 with Earley, but more notably, under Jason Kelly, who also recently joined Maroon & White as Earley’s pitching coach. Now the duo is reunited.

Obviously, Cunningham is pleased with what he’s learned from Kelly so far, but Earley also emphasized his new coach’s strengths, which will continue to help not only Cunningham but the rest of the Aggies’ bullpen.

“He’s going to be huge,” Earley said via On3 . “He’s a great human being, a great person, but he’s a phenomenal baseball coach. This guy is respected to the max.

“I like where we’re at with JK right now and I think you guys are really going to enjoy what he’s got.”

As the offseason progresses, the Aggies’ roster will continue to rest and recover for the start of spring training and the season, while Earley, Kelly and the rest of the Texas A&M coaching staff continue to plan and prepare for what will hopefully be another deep postseason push.

Adding Cunningham to the team only strengthens their case, and it appears he is ready to help his new team achieve their goals.

“Texas A&M, the 12th Man and the entire university are super special,” Earley said of coaching the Aggies. “The first day I was here, it hit me that this place is different.

“If you don’t like different, that’s your problem.”
