Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said that no commissioning ceremonies were held during the past six years of his tenure as such funds could have been used to provide amenities to the communities.

Ortom made this statement on Friday during the commissioning of the 47.52-kilometre Zaki-Biam, Afia-Gbeji road in Ukum Local Council and the Mbaton-Amaafu power project, as well as the Central Primary School, both in Katsina-Ala Local Council.

He stated that he decided to implement the projects after succumbing to pressure from his allies, including his predecessor, Senator Gabriel Suswam.

The governor disclosed that the N4b counterpart fund between the state and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) had been tapped. He said the fund would be used for the construction of 1,000 schools and the renovation of 99 others.

The governor said some critics had told him he had done nothing useful and that was why he could not implement projects.

Also, the former governor of the state, Senator Gabriel Suswam, said he persuaded Ortom to commission the projects to correct the perception that he had done nothing worth commissioning.

Suswam noted that it was not an easy task for the Governor to build and renovate projects, while advising communities that benefited from these projects to take ownership of the projects.

Earlier, Ukum Local Council Chairman Steve Ayua, a veteran broadcaster, commended Ortom and called for the construction of the Sankera-Chito-Vaase road.
