State College Spikes Strike Late to Defeat Mahoning Valley Scrappers

NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – Despite leading 2-1 at the start of the ninth inning, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost 6-2 to the State College Spikes on Saturday night at Eastwood Field.

The Spikes scored five runs in the top half of the final innings, highlighted by consecutive singles from Caleb Hill and Cooper Hext that accounted for four runs.

On the mound, Scrappers starting pitcher Grant Umberger threw six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, zero walks, zero runs and retiring 10 batters in the no-decision.

Offensively, it was Drey Dirksen and Drew Holderbach who both scored for the Scrappers, despite the loss.

The Scrappers are now 18-19 on the season and close out their four-game series against the Spikes with another contest at Eastwood Field on Sunday.
