MidPen Housing’s Sparrow Terrace affordable housing project is nearing completion this week on Miles Lane, just off Freedom Boulevard in Watsonville. Sparrow Terrace is a partnership between MidPen Housing and Encompass Community Services that focuses on the community’s urgent need for affordable housing and comprehensive behavioral health services. The project, scheduled for completion this summer, will provide 72 affordable rental units in six buildings, including a community building, and will be complemented by green space and revitalized wetland habitat. Thirty-five of the units will be reserved for farmworker families, and six apartments will serve formerly homeless individuals. Since its founding in 1970, MidPen Housing has created more than 130 communities in Northern California with more than 9,000 units of housing for low-income families, seniors and individuals with special needs. Encompass, which will coordinate mental health services at the site, is a nonprofit organization that has served Santa Cruz County residents since 1973. Encompass offers about 40 programs across the county, providing services in behavioral health, family and social well-being, early childhood education, housing and more.
