Enid Library’s Dinosaur Show Sparks STEM Curiosity!

ENID, OK – The room erupted with laughter as visitors to the Enid Public Library enjoyed the Dino Show.

Mad Science OKC visited the library as part of the Elementary STEM summer program. With over 100 visitors in attendance, participants started the day by watching Mad Science OKC volunteers put on an educational and hilarious show for the kids.

Some lucky attendees got the chance to get involved as they helped hunt for fossils and even dressed up as dinosaurs. The fun didn’t stop there, as everyone was invited to check out the Mad Science booths where they could see and test other experiments.

To encourage children to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the library has hosted several events this summer.

Children’s librarian Susan Shewey says the STEM events have been a huge success, featuring LEGO builds, cardboard creations, electronics and instruments.

“It brings a lot of people together in our community, from a huge spectrum of very diverse people,” Shewey said, “These STEM events help kids not to be afraid, to try new things, to experiment and to learn that you might not get it right the first time and try again. Those are great skills to learn.”

The library offers these events to the community free of charge, and all needed materials are distributed as they arrive. Larger events like the Dino Show are made possible with the help of a grant from Park Avenue Thrift.

“Park Avenue Thrift does a great job. Their store profits go back into our community and the library has been a very grateful recipient of the grant for three years. We use that money for books and programs during our Summer Reading event,” Shewey said.

As summer draws to a close, the library plans to hold two more STEM events. A LEGO build will take place on Wednesday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m.
