Naude acted on behalf of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in the tax investigation into controversial businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize.

On Friday, SARS confirmed that Naude is recovering in a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal after what the agency is calling an attempted murder.

In addition to a call from the Minister of Justice, civil rights group Freedom Under Law and the Pretoria Society of Advocates for Transformation, SARS also wants police to speed up investigations.

The shooting of Naude raised concerns after attacks on other whistleblowers and researchers in the country in the past.

Examples of this include the murder of Bosasa’s liquidators, Thomas and Cloete Murray, and the murder of Detective Constable Charl Kinnear of the Western Cape anti-gang unit.
