Obituary Edward Thomas McCarthy – Oakland, CA (1931-2024)

Born June 16, 1931, to Edward and Mary McCarthy in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, he was the older brother of two sisters and two brothers. The family grew up in Michigan, upstate New York, and Ohio. Tom earned a master’s degree in theology from Canisianum in Innsbruck, Austria, and in social work from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. He served as a director of Catholic Charities in Youngstown, Ohio, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. In the Bay Area, he worked for Veterans Administration Hospitals and Clinics. After retiring, he volunteered at San Quentin and later helped refugees at Berkeley Sanctuary Covenant. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched, especially his wife of 53 years, Mary, his sister-in-law, Gloria McCarthy and brother-in-law, John Cummins, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be private, with burial in Saint Joseph’s Cemetery to follow. Donations to your favorite charity are encouraged.
