Seasoned actors turn to social media to find work

In today’s entertainment landscape, seasoned actors are often overshadowed by fresh faces and new talent. One such actor, Sergio Klainer, known for his role in “Amor en custodia,” has even turned to digital platforms like TikTok to find jobs. At 88, Klainer shared a heartfelt video urging producers to give him a chance in any project, emphasizing his desire to keep working and feeling alive.

Fortunately for Klainer, his advocacy has yielded positive results. After filming his final telenovela in 2022, he will return to Televisa this year for a new melodrama. But his TikTok experience reflects a broader struggle faced by many veteran actors striving to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive industry that relies on new technologies for self-promotion.

In addition to Klainer, other veteran actresses such as Elvira Monsell and Martha Ofelia Galindo have also taken to the public stage in search of work. Monsell, known for her roles in telenovelas such as “Amor en Silencio” and “Rosalinda,” has been out of work for more than six years. In 2023, she revealed how this lack of work has negatively affected her mental health. Despite her desperate pleas on social media, the support of fans and colleagues such as Andrea Noli has yet to translate into new roles.

Monsell’s struggles are further compounded by financial troubles, especially after her brother was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in 2021, leading to increased medical costs for the family.

Meanwhile, Galindo, famous for her portrayal of the teacher Canuta in “Cero en Conducta,” has similarly expressed frustration over the scarcity of opportunities for older actors in Mexico. At 94, she reflected on her long career in theater, film and television, emphasizing her desire to continue contributing to the industry.

In a recent interview, she proposed creating a company that would showcase the talents of older actors, and advocated for their inclusion in the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, such an initiative has not yet materialized.

These stories highlight the challenges faced by seasoned actors in the industry as they navigate a changing landscape where their experience and talent are often ignored in favor of younger actors.
