Flying Shoes Community Dance, contras on August 2

BELFAST — Let your shoes fly on Friday, August 2, at the monthly Community Dance & Contra Dance, an evening of social connection presented by Belfast Flying Shoes.

The intergenerational, chem-free night begins at 6 p.m., with the All Comers Band warming up and choosing tunes. The band is open to all ages, instruments and skill levels; tunes will be posted at belfastflyingshoes.org. The easy-to-learn Community Dance led by Chrissy Fowler and Lisa Newcomb begins at 6:30 p.m. According to Flying Shoes, in a press release, families, newbies and seasoned dancers will twirl on the floor.

This month, Contra Dance is at 8 p.m., featuring Stomp Rocket and Gaye Fifer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In addition to being an accomplished dance leader, Fifer is also the past president of the Country Dance & Song Society, a national organization that promotes social dance, music, and song.

“The band, Stomp Rocket, will have dancers in a state of euphoria, fueled by Dave Langford’s driving violin, Glen Loper’s propulsive plucking and Bethany Waickman’s rock-solid rhythm,” Flying Shoes said. “Plus lots of stomping.”

The First Church is located at 8 Court Street in Belfast.

Admission is $15-20 (or $1 children $2 adults for those participating in the Community Dance only.) Masks will be provided for those who wish to wear them. For info, First Friday FAQ, and BFS Community Care Policy, visit www.belfastflyingshoes.org or contact [email protected].
