Mike Norvell says Georgia was one of the four best teams in college football

According to Florida State head coach Mike Norvell, Georgia was one of the four best teams in college football for the 2023 season.

A conversation about the 2023 college football season was rekindled during SEC Media Days when conference commissioner Greg Sankey said Georgia was one of the four best teams despite being left out of the playoffs. In that comment, Sankey took aim at Florida State at the end of his quote about how they handled being left out of the playoffs, and now it has trickled down to Florida State head coach Mike Norvell.

“Georgia was one of the top four teams and didn’t make it (to the Playoff),” Sankey said. “But you didn’t see us jumping up and down, complaining and hanging national championship banners.” He didn’t mention Florida State by name, but no one had trouble reading between the lines. Now Norvell has shared his thoughts on the subject, and what he said may surprise Georgia fans.

“I don’t disagree that Georgia was one of the top four teams in terms of talent and ability, but they also deserved to lose,” Norvell said. “Part of that was a result of what happened on the field. If you look at our team and what it was, we controlled the things we could control, we had an injury, unfortunately, but we had a team that responded to that. Everyone can have an opinion on what happened. I don’t disagree that they were one of the top four teams, but what happened on the field kept them out of the playoffs.”

Florida State and Georgia were scheduled to face off in the Orange Bowl at the end of last season, which hurt Florida State’s case for a playoff bid. The Bulldogs would go on to defeat the Seminoles 63-3. Florida State’s roster was depleted at the time due to bowl opt-outs, but Georgia had no players announce they were not participating in the bowl game, and the outcome of the game sparked a huge debate among college football fans about both sides of the coin.
