Bureau for Sustainability publishes updates on climate action

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Last week, the Office of Sustainability presented the first formal Climate Action Update to City Council since the adoption of the Community Climate Action Plan in January 2023. In addition to the presentation to Council, the update included a narrative report, the new FY25 Climate Action Workplan, and the latest greenhouse gas emissions inventory. The Office of Sustainability also launched a new Climate and Sustainability Dashboard, an engagement tool to help community members understand and participate in climate action locally.

The updated GHG inventory shows continued progress toward achieving the City’s emissions reduction goals of a 45% reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. Communitywide emissions are down 42% from our 2011 baseline. Municipal emissions are down 36% over the same period. GHG reductions are being driven by actions at the local, state, and federal levels. Visit our website for more information and our 2024 Climate Action Report for a more detailed analysis of the 2022 GHG inventory.

The 2023 Climate Action Plan commits to an annual update on progress toward our community-wide emissions goals. The aforementioned report provides an overview and update on both city- and community-led programs and initiatives that have been implemented since the CAP was implemented to help the community achieve our climate goals. It also provides a look ahead to initiatives planned for the new fiscal year. An updated FY25 Climate Action Work Plan provides more information on those projects.

The new Climate and Sustainability Dashboard is an engagement tool designed to help community members access information about climate action in Charlottesville. It’s a place to share information and resources, tell stories, and showcase the work of our community partners.
