Man falls from crowded local train in Mumbai, old video reignites online safety debate

Mumbai’s local trains have long been the lifeblood of the city, but they have also been a source of concern due to their notorious overcrowding. Every day, thousands of people cram into these trains, and with the monsoon in full swing, the situation is only getting worse. Delays and reduced train services only add to the chaos, increasing crowding and the risk of accidents. Amid this perennial problem, an old video of a Mumbai local train on ‘X’ has resurfaced, sparking fresh discussions.

The 2022 video captures a chilling incident. A young man, Danish Zakir Hussain, was hanging along with a few others from the footboard of a local train in Mumbai, while it was travelling from Kalwa, Thane to Dadar at 9:30 am. Passengers on a parallel train captured the scene. Hussain, while dangling precariously, twisted his head and tragically hit a pole, causing him to fly off the train and land on the tracks. The fall left onlookers shocked.

When this clip started doing rounds again, people couldn’t help but vent their frustration. One commented, “The passengers travelling in local trains in Mumbai have been suffering from overcrowding for a long time now. The passengers risk their lives to travel in local trains. This issue needs to be addressed by taking it seriously.” Another added, “There are people who just like to hang around, yes it gets crowded at the same time, have travelled multiple times when there was enough space inside, but Bravehearts like to hang around the door and keep a very thin line on the door.”

A third voice joined the conversation: “More and more trains should be provided to Mumbai for locals/local trains and the travel time of long distance passenger trains should be reduced and more local trains should be provided and the timings should be adjusted so that no one has to suffer after work.” Another request was more personal: “People should value your life more. I will never risk my life even if my job is taken away because I was late. Not all people from poor backgrounds risk their lives like this and have more sense. But some do not have the sense to value their life.”
