Dan Evans confirms Andy Murray has Olympic medal in his sights before he retires

Britain’s Dan Evans believes legendary tennis star Andy Murray can claim an Olympic gold medal. The 37-year-old is often regarded as the best British player in the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, particularly in the singles category.

Murray announced earlier this year that he would retire from professional tennis after the Paris Olympics. The mega event officially kicked off on Friday and will see athletes from around the world compete in a bid to secure the ultimate prize for their respective countries.

The Glasgow-born star recently announced that he will not be competing in the singles category. Instead, he will be putting all his energy into playing in the doubles category. His partner Evans was recently quoted in a report expressing optimism that the former world number one can leave professional tennis with another Olympic medal. The 34-year-old stated that he believes Murray is ‘more competitive than ever’ ahead of the mega event.

“There’s nothing I want more than a medal for him and me,” Evans said, as quoted by Eurosport. “It’s really positive that we’ve agreed on that and that we can work together to give ourselves the best chance. I don’t see any reason why we can’t do something special. I don’t think Andy wants it as a farewell, I think he wants to win a medal and he’ll say goodbye in his own way. He’s here to do his job and get a medal. He was there the other day doing sprints at the end of our session. Knowing Andy, he’s still competitive and still working hard.”

Murray has struggled with fitness issues throughout his career, which is why he announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2018, but returned to the court shortly after. Earlier this year, Murray suffered an ankle injury that kept him out of action for two months. He also suffered a back injury during the Queen’s ATP Championships, which forced him to withdraw from the singles round of Wimbledon.
