New Delhi: Indian shooter Manu Bhaker will attempt to make history in the women’s 10m air pistol final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday. She made her mark in the history books on Saturday (Day 1) by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the final of the event. She finished third in the qualification round with a score of 580-27x, scoring the most centre-back shots. The 22-year-old will be aiming for gold in the final.

After a lackluster showing from the mixed team and individual events by Indian shooters at the start of the opening day, expectations were high that Bhaker would turn the tide. Bhaker looked promising from the start of her event as she jumped to fourth place in the qualifying round after scoring two 97s in the first and second runs respectively. She scored a brilliant 98 in the third run to move up to second place but dropped to third place after scoring 96 in the fourth run. Her compatriot Rhythm Sangwan could not make it to the final as she finished 15th in the qualifying round.

She would not want to remember the horrors of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where she failed to qualify for the final after a malfunction with her rifle and will go into the final fresh to aim for gold, also a maiden Olympic medal. Bhaker will compete against some of the world’s best shooters in her category in the final and will have a chance to create history for India by becoming the first woman to win a gold medal in shooting at the Olympics.

Her main competitors are Hungary’s Veronika Major, who won the qualifying round with a score of 582-22x, and women like OH Ye Jin from South Korea and Jiang Ranxin from China, who also holds the qualifying record in the women’s 10m air pistol final at both the Olympics and the World Championships.
