Robbery suspect shoots during foot chase with Birmingham police

A robbery suspect has been arrested after shots were fired during a foot chase by Birmingham police on Saturday.

Initially it appeared that a bystander had been shot, but police determined that no one was injured.

Officers from the South Precinct were dispatched at 12:45 a.m. to a report of a robbery in progress in the 4600 block of 13th Avenue North, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

Officers quickly arrived on the scene when they heard that an adult man had been robbed of several items and that the suspect was fleeing on foot.

Officers began a foot chase with the suspect, Fitzgerald said. During the foot chase, officers heard the suspect fire a shot and then saw a bystander fall to the ground.

Initially, officers thought the bystander had been shot, but later determined that no one had been shot.

The suspect has been arrested. He is being questioned at the police station.

According to Fitzgerald, officers do not believe the suspect shot at them.
