Detroit Lions claim LB off waivers to fill vacant roster spot

ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions have filled their vacant roster spot by successfully filing a waiver claim for former Cardinals linebacker Trevor Nowaske. The roster is now 53-man strong, and the first practice squad is expected to be announced later today.

Nowaske is a former Salem High School star who went on to play at Saginaw Valley State and attended camp with the Lions last season. He earned a spot on the practice squad and then impressed coaches enough — particularly on special teams — that he was signed to the 53-man roster late in the season. He appeared in two games and made one tackle on special teams.

He was released in December and then claimed by the Arizona Cardinals. Now that he has been released by the Cardinals, he returns to Detroit after being claimed by the Lions.

The Lions now have seven linebackers on the roster, including special teams aces Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Malcolm Rodriguez and Ben Niemann. Nowaske will now add to that mix, providing more depth as Detroit prepares to implement the new play.

No Lions discounts were claimed via waivers.
