The 2024 US Open continues to heat up in the final week. The top favorites are falling left and right, and Sunday was no different as reigning women’s champion Coco Gauff was surprised by compatriot Emma Navarro in the round of 16.

Navarro, ranked No. 13, claimed a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory as Gauff struggled with her serve and forehand. Gauff, ranked No. 3 in the world, totaled 19 double faults, along with 60 unforced errors. Navarro lost in the first round of last year’s tournament, but she is doing much better now. She is set to face Paula Badosa in Tuesday’s quarterfinals.

The men’s round of 16 will be played without two of the world’s top three players after No. 2 Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz were upset on back-to-back nights. Without them, the U.S. men’s chances of breaking a 21-year drought have increased dramatically. The last American to win a Grand Slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open.

Twelfth-seeded Taylor Fritz, 14th-seeded Tommy Paul and 20th-seeded Frances Tiafoe are still pursuing that goal.

“If I’m the one to end it, that’s basically my life’s dream and it would mean the world to me,” Fritz said in an interview with CBS Sports.

Fritz reached the quarterfinals with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 8 Casper Ruud. He has never advanced further in a Grand Slam, but he will be looking for a ticket to the semifinals when he takes on World No. 4 Alexander Zverev. They met earlier this year in the round of 16 of Wimbledon. It was an intense battle in five sets that Fritz won with a two-set deficit.

Meanwhile, Tiafoe advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 win over Alexei Popyrin, who surprised Djokovic in the third round. Tiafoe will now face No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday. To join Fritz and Tiafoe in the quarterfinals, Paul will face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Monday.
