Demi Moore speaks out about ‘shame’ over nudity in new film

Demi Moores new horror movie, The substancemade headlines for its nude scenes, but the 61-year-old actress says that’s not the focus of the film.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat and co-lead actor Margaretha Qualley, The substance Moore plays TV fitness guru Elizabeth Sparkle, whose boss (Dennis Quaid) wants to replace her with someone younger, so she uses a mysterious black market drug to create a more youthful version of herself (played by Qualley).

In an interview with TermMoore spoke candidly about why she wanted to play the role.

“As a role, I was definitely pushed out of my comfort zone and I felt like it wasn’t just about dealing with aging and the male perspective of the idealized woman, which women often believe in, but also about the struggle that exists within ourselves, the intense, harsh judgment that we live with, the striving for perfection that doesn’t exist,” the star explained.

Moore also pointed out something she found “kind of intriguing” about the reporting The substance received in the media.

“It’s interesting that I just saw a couple of little heads (over Substance), particularly in the English-language press, and it was interesting to almost the point of the film that the way they positioned the headline was just focused on the fact that it was about nudity,” she shared. “And I thought, ‘Oh, how sad that it’s presented in a way that’s embarrassing and belittling.’ It’s the worst part of the film,” Moore continued.

The substance will premiere in theaters on September 20.
