Residents of a small Ohio town are furious over the devastation caused by the massive influx of 20,000 Haitians

Ohioans are outraged at city council meetings over a cultural clash between locals and Haitian immigrants, demanding the city take action to address the issue.

Thousands of Haitians have arrived in Springfield since the COVID-19 pandemic, and residents are reporting an increase in crime, chaos and car accidents due to the huge influx of new residents. About 20,000 Haitians have arrived in the city of 58,000, city officials said.

“I see what’s happening in the streets. And I see you guys sitting there in comfy chairs and suits… I really challenge you to come out here and do something,” said Anthony Harris, 28. “These Haitians are running into trash cans. They’re running into buildings. They’re overturning cars in the middle of the street, and I don’t know how you can be comfortable with that.”

Resident Lisa Hayes, 64, recounted an incident in which migrants bullied her in a supermarket, blocking her shopping cart and refusing to let her through the aisles.

“I don’t know what label you put on it,” she said, bewildered by the incident. “I would like to see them have some mutual respect.”

Residents said migrants were crowding public spaces and hitting people with cars. Some also said the city should provide driving lessons.

Resident Diana Daniels blamed culture clashes for the problems. “Countries… are defined by their culture and their language, not their color. When people stand here and describe what’s happening to them, they’re often painted with the broad brush of racism that has nothing to do with it.”

“Shame on you,” she told the city council.

Residents complain about the massive influx of Haitian migrants.

At another hearing, a woman named Noel said she no longer feels safe in Springfield and that migrants are camping near her home.

“I try to help them as much as I can to prevent them from trying to squat on my property. But it’s so unsafe. I’ve learned that they don’t speak English in my front yard, they yell at me, throw mattresses in my front yard, throw trash in my front yard,” she said.

“Look at me, I weigh 95 pounds. I wouldn’t be able to defend myself if I had to ‘pack my things and move.'”

“It’s killing both of us mentally,” she continued. “I don’t understand what you expect from us as citizens… Who’s going to protect me? I want to get out of this city. I’m sorry. Please give me a reason to stay.”

“How do you know we don’t catch criminals and rapists?” a man in a blue Harley-Davidson T-shirt said at a hearing on the migrant issue after the son of two teachers was killed in a bus crash.

Another resident cited general leadership shortcomings. “When am I going to get my money back?” he said.
