Sandler took to Instagram on Monday, his 58th birthday, to share the same photo, along with the message, “It ain’t over. The way I see it… we’re just getting started.” Sandler delivers a similar line in the original film as rival to Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald.

No plot details have been revealed yet for the sequel. Happy Gilmore Sandler played an unsuccessful hockey player who, thanks to his monstrous drives, becomes an unexpected golfing sensation.

McDonald let the cat out of the bag earlier this year when he said during a radio interview that a sequel script was in the works. The project was officially announced a few months later, with Netflix posting on social media in May:Happy Gilmore is back! Adam Sandler will reprise his iconic role in an all-new film coming to Netflix.”

Sandler has said in recent media appearances that Benny Safdie will play a role in Happy Gilmore 2while NFL star Travis Kelce will make a cameo. McDonald will also reprise his role as Shooter.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood ReporterSandler shared how excited he was about revisiting the popular character.

“The idea that me and my buddy Tim Herlihy had and the more we talked about it and worked on it scene by scene, the more it grew and we felt really strongly about the movie itself,” Sandler said at the time. “We’re happy with where it is now and this is an exciting time for us. I don’t know how our brains suddenly said, ‘Let’s do this.’ It just happened.”

In 2015, Dugan said THR that he does not Happy Gilmore sequel as likely. The filmmaker said of Sandler at the time: “I can’t imagine him ever doing that, but it’s Hollywood, so you never say it’ll never happen.”
