PWHL Boston to be called Boston Fleet: View PWHL team names

Until Monday, none of the PWHL’s six founding members had a name other than the city during the league’s inaugural season this year.

“It really embodies that tireless, passionate attitude of what it means to be part of the city and to represent the city at a professional level,” Fleet Captain Hilary Knight said during a virtual press conference. “It’s really cool to have something that you feel embodies the city to this extent, so I’m really excited and happy.”

Somehow “clam chowder” missed the boat, but the fleet’s website dives into nautical life with cannonballs with nearly every other salty phrase listed at the top of the explanations and links, including “Anchors aweigh,” “A new voyage begins,” “Sail with us,” etc.

A 38-second video titled “We Are the Boston Fleet” accompanying the announcement begins and ends with the screeching of seagulls, interspersed with clips of slapshots and hard hits from last season, incoming waves, a trio of freighters, a foghorn and a logo full of water spray, along with cheering fans.

The Fleet plays its home games in Lowell at the Tsongas Center, located on the Merrimack River, a 39-mile kayak ride from the Atlantic Ocean.

The team may still move to a location closer to Boston Harbor, but Lowell is set for next season.

“We’re working on a number of other options that, quite frankly, we’re not ready to address yet,” said Amy Scheer, PWHL senior vice president of business operations. “If we have other location announcements, I promise you we’ll make that announcement, but we’re not quite there yet.”

Knight was excited about the future of a team that fans and players can now call by name.

“I can’t wait to play in front of our fans because it’s really special to stand in our arena and see this sea of green,” said Knight.

Kanan Bhatt-Shah, the league’s vice president of brand and marketing who attended Boston University, elaborated on the selection of “Fleet.”

“Just the strong maritime history and heritage there, you think of ‘Old Ironsides’ in Charlestown,” Bhatt-Shah said. “We really wanted to combine that with the spirit of the people, the spirit of Bostonians and New Englanders, that resilience, that unity, that togetherness and that spirit.

“’Fleet’ so beautifully encompasses both of those things and brings them to life. And the logo was meant — in terms of waves of resilience, the ‘B’ sideways anchor — to bring all of those elements together as well.”

The five other PWHL team names are Minnesota Frost, Montreal Victoire, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres.

The new kits for the six teams will be unveiled late next month or early November.
